Sheffield Independent – Tuesday 28 July 1891

Rotherham West Biding- Police Court.
Alleged Highway Robbery with Violence at Wath

Arthur Oldfield, collier, was charged with highway robbery with violence, and attempting to ravish Rachel Fish, married woman, of Broom Hill, Wath, on Friday last.

Mr. Hickmott prosecuted, and said the prisoner accosted prosecutrix on the highway, threw her down, and attempted to outrage her. He violently assaulted her, breaking her jaw in two places. He took from her a satchel containing certain articles.

Prosecutrix was unable to appear, and he had, therefore, to ask for a remand.

Police-sergeant Lyttle said he apprehended prisoner on Friday, at 11.50 p.m., at Wombwell, and charged him with the offences. Prisoner replied, I will try and prove that I was not there. If I get 12 months it will kill me, as l am not in good health.”

A certificate was handed in from Dr. Jones that prosecutrix was unable to attend.

Mr. Hickmott intimated that it would probably be necessary next week to apply for a further remand.

Prisoner was remanded for a week.
