A Wood on Fire.

On Sunday afternoon, between three and four o’clock, Wombwell wood, about five miles from Barnsley, was found to be on fire.

Edward Burgan, the woodman, was soon on the spot, and, assisted the police-officers and a crowd of persons whom the flames had attracted, did all they could to extinguish the fire. Their efforts were for a long time unavailing, but ultimately were successful, not, however, before from 20 to 25 acres of underwood and saplings were consumed.

The fire was principally confined to what is known as the “Little wood,” which contained a large number of young trees. The amount of damage has not yet been ascertained, but must be considerable.

The wood is the property of Sir George Wombwell, Bart.
