A Wombwell Separation

A young married couple were parted owing to the husband’s persistent cruelty. The parties were John Wilson, trammer, Wombwell and Clariss Wilson, his wife, and they lived at 100 Blyth St.

There were only married on July 10 last, the woman being 21 years of age, and the man 22. The wife declared that since the birth of the child, on October 30, her husband had ill-treated her. He had pinched her in bed, and three weeks after the birth of the child he struck a very violent blow in the mouth. Later he banged her head against the wall and kicked her.

The defendant, who was charged with persistent cruelty, also sold up the home and took the baby to his sisters. For the others when it was said that his wife’s mother had tried to separate the young couple. He denied any assaults of any kind.

After hearing the evidence the bench granted a separation order, the wife to have the custody of the baby, and the defendant to contribute 10 shillings per week.
