A Veteran of Lundhill

Mr Joseph Rhodes, of Lundhill Row, Wombwell, one of the few survivors of the Lundhill Colliery explosion of 1857, as he appears in “The Toilers,” a new coalfield film, exhibited for the first time at Mexborough last Sunday.

He is standing by the ruins of the shaft up which the flames came on the 19th of February, 1857, when 189 men and boys, including one family of seven brothers, were killed.

Mr. Rhodes also worked for a time at Swaithe Main the scene of another of the majorĀ  disasters of the coal industry.
