Two Men Killed

At a late hour on Friday night a sad fatality occurred at the Houghton Main colliery, resulting in the death of William Ware (30) who resided at 59, Milton St, Wombwell, and John Thomas Pugh (20) of number 2 Stanley Rd, Ardsley.

Both men went to work on Friday afternoon on the night shift. Pugh was officiating as trammer to Ware, and they were seen at work by Arthur Randerson, a pony driver.

Shortly before 8 o’clock Randerson had occasion to go away, and on going to deceased working place about 10 minutes after he found that a large fall of top coal at taken place, and that the men where nowhere to be seen.

He however heard a moan, and at once raised an alarm.

Henry Higgins and William Beck working near arrived on the scene and set about to extricate the men.

When the coal and debris had been removed the remains of the buried men were found but life was extinct.

The bodies bodies were removed to the surface, and taken home to await an inquest. Ware leaves a wife and four children.
