Excellent Work by Woman Secretary

June 1927

Mexborough and Swinton Times June 24, 1927

There could be no more fitting employment for a woman than that of secretary of a War Memorial Fund, but not many members of the fair sex hold such positions.

The village of Hemingfield, Jump, Lundhill and Tingle Bridge provided an exception when they appointed Miss C Byford, who has performed the duties with a degree of success that few men could have achieved.

Miss Byford’s work has been greatly appreciated and no sooner had the committee appointed a task for which they were appointed when they began to discuss ways and means of recognising her services.

This little act of acknowledgement was performed at a “picnic” in the grounds of “The Sycamores,” Hemingfield on Monday. In the presence of a large company, over which counsellor H holds was presided, the Rector of Wombwell presented Miss Byford with a gold bracelet watch on behalf of officials and subscribers. The rector said that Miss iPhone was an indispensable figure in the village life of hemming Field and John, insomuch as she not only worked herself but was a source of inspiration to others.

Similar expression of appreciation were voiced by Councillor Preston and the Rev LJ Carter. The latter said no one realised better than his the splendid word Miss Byford did for the church. Miss Byford thanked all who had been associated with the gift.

Miss Byford is associated with numerous village organisations. She secretary of the jump and Hemingfield hospital Sunday movement, secretary of St George’s parochial church council and secretary of St George’s girls club. She is employed on the staff of the Wombwell Main Collieries Co Ltd.
