South Yorkshire and the Hull Coal Trade.
The Hull coal return for the past month shows an increase in the quantity of coal received at that port from the Yorkshire collieries of 5,000 tons, as against the quantity sent in the previous year, the tonnage last month being 109,768 tons, against 101,576 tons in 1883, the quantities for the four months being 390,520 tons, as against 379,180 tons last year.
The coal exported from Hull last month was only 83,898 tons, against 51,643 tons in April of 1883. Amongst the collieries contributing most largely to the total sent last month Denaby Main sent 12,904 tons, against 14,176 tons last year; Manvers’ Main 6,296 tons, last year 3,208 tons; South Kirkby Colliery, a new pit, sent 3,786 tons; Edmunds and Swaithe 4,624 tons, last year 1,192 tons; Elsecar 6,600 tons, last year 4,784 tons; Wharncliffe Carlton 1,072 tons, 748 tons last year; Wharncliffe Silkstone Collieries 2,232 tons, last year 1,288 tons.
Some of the pits in South Yorkshire show a falling-off, Wombwell Main having only sent 2,288 tons in four months, against 6,208 tons in the corresponding period of last year. The West Riding and Silkstone pits sent only 7,352 tons since January, against 12,508 tons in the first four months of last year.
