Knocked Down by a Dray at Wath

An inquest was held at Wombwell yesterday, on the body of Thomas William Fletcher (47), miner, Park Street Wombwell who died on Tuesday from the effects of injury sustained by being knocked down by a dray at Wath, the previous Saturday.

According to the evidence of the widow, deceased had been ill for a fortnight, and at the time of the accident had been to Wath Main Colliery to make arrangements for returning to work.

George William Briggs, greengrocer, 29, Rotherham Road, West Melton, said he was leading his horse out of Barnsley Road into Orchard Place, when someone shouted, “Hey up!” Pulling up and looking around he saw the deceased stumble, with his face against the lamp of the dray on the off side. He fell on the back of his head in the roadway, and when picked up was unconscious.

A verdict was returned that death was caused to haemorrhage of the brain, brought on by been accidentally knocked down in the street. The Coroner observed that there was no suggestion of blame attaching the driver.
