Cortonwood Couldn’t Force it Against Denaby
The honours of a drawn Council game at Brampton went to Cortonwood who scored 179 for nine declared against a “time out” 142 for nine by Denaby and Cadeby.
Cortonwood are getting deservedly good support and the cricket seen in this match was certainly worth the best attendance of the season so far. Highlight of the match was a brilliant 7 for 26 by Cortonwood’s medium pace bowler Philip Wrightson. Five were clean bowled.
There was tense excitement during the extra five overs claimed by Cortonwood in what proved to be a futile effort to get their opponents off the pitch.
Top scorer for Cortonwood was Eric Peploe. who carried his bat for a brisk 39 put on in half-an-hour. Runner-up for Cortonwood batting I honours was 21-year-old Brian Thorpe, who to the delight of the crowd hit two lovely sixes. When Brian came to Cortonwood his strong suit was bowling but he is rapidly developing as a stylish bat. Nevertheless he did manage to get a vital wicket.
Most obstinate of the Denaby batsmen were T. Walker with 46 and E. Waddington. 24 not out.
