Cricket Ground Under Water
Several roads in the Wombwell and Darfleld district were flooded yesterday. One was the main Pontefract-Doncaster road Broomhill, another road linking Mitchell Main and Darfield Main Collieries at Netherwood.
On the Pontefract-Rotherharn road at the foot of Cat Hill, Broomhill, there were nearly two feet of water, but conditions improved the day advanced. The River Dearne rose sharply during the day but in the open land the flooding was not nearly so serious as usual, thanks measures taken by the Dearne and Dove Internal Drainage Board. The worst of the flooding in the Wombwell area was experienced in the Netherwood Road district. All efforts to protect Mitchell Main cricket ground proved unavailing against the rush of water, the Dove stream sweeping over the roadway and Invading the whole ground.
