Sheffield Independent – Monday 05 December 1927
Newark 1 Wombwell 3
Wombwell were extremely fortunate to secure the points as Newark were the agressors throughout, but although they bombarded the visitor’s goal continuously they could not score.
After 20 minute Pearson shot was deflected by Challoner into the net, and Wombwell crossed over with the one goal lead.
Rarely did Wombwell cross the halfway line in the second half, but in a breakaway Smith swung across a centre from Murray to score a second.
Copley reduce the lead seven minutes from time and again restored the two-goal lead from another breakaway a minute from time.
