Brampton Man a Loss To Local Cricket

Mr Irving Gawthorpe, BSC (25), youngest son of Mrs Edith Gawthorpe, 16 Moorbridge Crescent, Brampton, Wombwell and the late Mr Ernest Gawthorpe, is to leave this country shortly for South Africa.

At present employed as manager of the coal preparation plant at Dodworth Colliery, Mr Gawthorpe has obtained a post in the laboratory of the Chibuluma Copper Mines Ltd, Rhodesia. He will be leaving by air on Wednesday, June 12.

A former pupil of Brampton Ellis School and Wath on Dearne Grammar School, Mr Gawthorpe graduated at the Leeds University four years ago. Before taking his present post a year ago, he did training with the National Coal Board for three years.

Mr Gawthorpe is well known as a sportsman. He plays rugger for old Wathonians (who are this week arranging a sendoff party for him) and cricket for Cortonwood in the Yorkshire Council and for Grimethorpe gentlemen.

A committee member of Wombwell Cricket Lovers society, one of his last matches in this country will be the Johnny Wardle benefit match.

Old Wathonians party is provisionally fixed for June 7 and there will also be a sendoff by Grimethorpe gentlemen at Brampton on Wednesday, May 22.
