Able Seaman Ezra Major Hitchen

of New Wombwell was killed in action on April 28.

His mother has received the following letter from his commanding officer:

“Although it is no compensation to you, it may be of some little comfort to know that his death was instantaneous, and that he had no suffering.”

The Army chaplain also wrote:

“it is with deepest regret that I write you of the death of your son, who was killed in our last advance by a high explosive shell while he was working his Lewis gun. In spite of the fact that we were under heavy fire, he stuck to his guns unto the last, fighting bravely.

His loss will be deeply felt, not only by his comrades but also by the battalion.

He gave his all for his country, and we can rest assured that so noble a self sacrifice will not go without its reward.”
