Wombwell Bombshell
Eight Goals Against Sutton!
Swift’s Part
Wombwell 8 Sutton 2
Wombwell: Smith; Thornton, Parkinson; Clarke, Brelsford, Riley; Farmer, Pearce, Swift, Binney, Sheldon
Wombwell’s fortune underwent a pleasant and surprising change on Saturday at Hough Lane, by gaining probably the most decisive win in their Midland League career.
The event synchronised the first appearance at Hough Lane of Tom Brelsford, the former Wednesday and Barrow half. Brelsford, who lives in the Rotherham district, signed up a fortnight ago and made his debut for Wombwell at Frickley. He then played a useful game, but on Saturday he was the star artist.
His judgement, clever distribution and precision worthiest great factors in Wombwell success. Under his influence the team played an inspired game. Swift (photo), the choice of whom for the centre forward position formed some misgivings, made history by scoring five goals – four in the second half.
Scorers: Wombwell; Farmer(2), Swift (5), Pearce, Sutton; Mansfield (2)
