The old-established flour mill at Mexboro’, the property of Mr. F. White, has been purchased by the Barnsley British Co-operative Society.
The new halt provided at Pastures Bridge, Mexboro’, is being well patronised.
Mexboro’ Congregationalists are holding a “Bazarette” on Wednesday and Thursday next.
The estimates of the Dearne Valley tram scheme are printed elsewhere in three columns.
The Cortonwood Collieries have declared a further interim dividend of 2½ per cent. (6d. per share).
To-day’s issue of the “Times” consists of 16 pages, containing 128 columns, a monster pennyworth.
Superintendent Witty, a keen advocate of ambulance work, has thrown in his lot with the Swinton Division.
The Archbishop of York will pay a visit, probably the last for a long time, to Mexboro’ on Wednesday next.
Last evening (Thursday) Miss Pease visited Swinton and gave an address to the Swinton Liberal Association.
The Unionists of Swinton assembled in good force on Tuesday evening to hear Mr. Dransfield give an address on current politics.
Councillor Chappell, of Swinton, contributes a letter this week on Swinton Council business, which will be read with considerable interest.
It is expected that the rail-less car service between Mexboro’ and Conisboro’ will be commenced shortly and will be in operation by the middle of next year.
Mr. George White, of High Melton, and Dr. J. Gardner, of Mexboro’, are expected to arrive home on Monday. We understand that Mr. White has much benefited by the holiday.
Miss Hanson, of Scarboro’, formerly of Wombwell, a generous supporter of church work, opened a sale of work at Wombwell to assist in clearing off the debt on the Wombwell Parish Hall.
By kind permission of the Colliery Company, the Denaby Lawn Tennis Club will hold their ninth annual whist drive and dance in the Large Hall, Denaby Main, on January 20th, 1914.
The following clergymen and laymen have left this district to work in the various mission fields:—D. Allott (Wombwell), West Africa; E. E. Wilkinson (Parkgate), Canada; H. Woodward (Greasbro’), Japan.
Alice Sagar, the servant-girl who was censured in the Barnburgh arson case, and whose record is a terribly bad one, was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment at Leeds this week, for stealing jewellery at Balby.
At a meeting at Leeds, on Saturday, to consider the question of inaugurating a County Federation in connection with the Ancient Order of Foresters, Mr. G. Cotton, of Swinton, represented the Wath district.
A course of five Gilchrist lectures, to be given at Wath, will be preceded by a lecture on “Educational Ideals, and the work of the Gilchrist Trust,” on Thursday, Dec. 18th, by Dr. A. H. Fison, the Secretary of the Trust.
The Mexboro’ Old Folks’ Treat is to be held on Thursday, January 8th, in the Mexboro’ Public Hall. This year’s event should prove a record, as the committee have a substantial balance in hand from last year.
A Wath resident who is in possession of a private water supply has sent to the Wath Council an account for three guineas for supplying neighbours with water during the breakdown recently of the town’s water supply.
The sacred concert held recently at the Picture Palace, Wath, on behalf of the South Wales Disaster Fund, realised the sum of £13, which has been forwarded. Great credit is due to the West Melton Glee Society, the promoters, for their successful efforts in this direction.
Wombwell Urban Council have received for presentation on Tuesday next the honorary vellum certificate from the Royal Humane Society, for George Adams, aged 22, of Haveron Street, Wombwell, in recognition of his gallantry in rescuing a child, aged four, from drowning in the canal.
