“Kilner” Cup

An echo of the generosity of the late Mr. Seth Kilner in the matter of local sport, and particularly of his love of cricket, is contained in a proposal in regard to the “Kilner” Cup, which he offered for competition in evening cricket. It will be recalled that the Wombwell Evening Cricket League, sponsored very largely by Mr. Kilner in the first place, provided pleasant and successful cricket for several seasons, with Mr. Smith (who has now left the district) as secretary. The cup has not been played for for several years. The proposal is that a schoolboys’ cricket league be formed for the Wombwell district, with the “Kilners” Cup as the trophy. The matter has already been discussed at a meeting of the Mitchell Main and Darfield Main Welfare Institute Committee (sports section) and a deputation has been appointed to interview Mr. Gordon Kilner, manager at Darfield Main Colliery, to obtain his views and wishes on the subject. It is believed that a schoolboys’ cricket league on well organised competitive lines would provoke great interest in the district. It is suggested that the competition should consist of teams representing schools within an eight miles radius of Wombwell Town Hall, and that it should be run on “knock-out” lines similar to the tournaments which have proved so popular throughout the industrial districts this season. It is further suggested that all the matches should be played on the Mitchell Main ground, one of the best in the district, and that the Mitchell Main club equipment be used so far as is “fitting” and practicable. The development of this plan will be awaited with keen interest. The promoters have already assured themselves that the schools of the district are willing to co-operate and help. As reported elsewhere, the Wombwell Old People’s Treat Committee are organising a schools football competition.
