Little Meriel Thomas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Thomas, of Hough Lane, Wombwell, has found a giant mushroom. All she needs now is a nice juicy beef steak to go with it. Will anyone oblige? In the meantime, she thinks she will use it as an umbrella.
Meriel has weighed it carefully with her mother’s scales, and she says it is just “twopence” short of one pound. Had she not broken the stalk it would probably have scaled a pound. Is it a record?
The mushroom was picked up in a meadow belonging to Mr. George Ogden, of Aldham Farm. There has been a record crop of mushrooms during the recent wet weather but the cold wind has now taken them all.
