The Queen has decided that November 13th shall be observed as Remembrance Sunday. The Two Minutes Silence will be observed throughout the United Kingdom and local authorities are asked to arrange for the suspension of all vehicular traffic between 11 a.m. and 11.2 a.m. Details of the arrangements in the United Kingdom will be forwarded to all parts of the Commonwealth.
The day that Sheffield Wednesday pivot, Peter Swan, celebrates his 24th birthday this Saturday—he will be playing for England against Ireland.
Since he became Sheffield Wednesday’s first choice inside-left in October, 1958, John Fantham has missed only two games.
Of 18 National Coal Board employees who in May sat City and Guilds examinations in advanced fuel technology, 16 were successful. The men take a three-year spare-time course, on the successful completion of which they may be accepted as Associate Members of the Institute of Fuel.
Mr. Norman Schofield, manager of Wombwell Main Colliery for the past three and a half years, has been appointed manager at Barrow Colliery. He has been succeeded at Wombwell Main by Mr. John Lee, manager of Grange Colliery. The appointments take effect on Monday.
South Yorkshire’s September rains this year have been the heaviest for several years, according to reports from Doncaster’s Holmes Pumping Station. About 2.86 inches were recorded. Last year, September was a completely dry month. Finningley Meteorological Office recorded 2.49 inches of rain for the month, in comparison with only .01 inches in September 1959.
The Chapel of Ease at Great Houghton, in the parish of Darfield, is to be re-opened at the end of next month after reconstructions. Capt. J. E. Lavery, C.A., who has charge of the church, says they need a new hymn board and a set of carpet falls, and suggests that these might be purchased by parishioners as memorials. The Chapel of Ease was formerly the private chapel of the Rodes family when they occupied Houghton Old Hall three centuries ago.
