South Yorkshire Collieries and the Hull Coal Trade

The Hull coal return shows that during the past month the tonnage of coal forwarded to the chief Yorkshire ports amounted to 201,232 tons, as compared with 171,856 tons in May, 1894, an increase of 30,000 tons.

Denaby Main heads the list as usual, having sent 34,248 tons, more than three times as much as any other colliery, and almost double the Denaby contribution of May, 1894. Last month Denaby alone sent 16 per cent of the total tonnage forwarded to the port, and in five months sent 119,216 tons, as against 83,928 tons, an increase of 35,288 tons.

Elsecar comes second by a leap to 10,232 tons, from 4,200 tons, an increase of 6,032 tons; Carlton Main is third, and Thrybergh next with 7,488 tons, against 8,639 tons. Aldwarke Main has an increase of 2,408 tons—6,920 against 4,512; Hoyland Silkstone jumped to 5,168 from 2,664, an increase 2,504 tons; Kilnhurst had 6,024, against 6,504, falling off 480 tons; Wath Main has an increase of 3,256 tons.

The Hull trade falls more and more to the lot of the large thick coal pits.
