Hesketh And Dodds Play Important Parts

Frickley gave a dismal display at Westfield Lane on Saturday against Brampton, who by four wickets won their first match in the Council. Frickley showed that they were sadly in need of batting practice. Though the wicket was perfect they offered weak opposition to the bowling of W. Hesketh, (picture) who took 6 for 36. The chief consolation from a batting point of view was the performance of H. Morris, a mining student at Frickley Colliery, who on his debut with the team contributed a stylish 20 and was top scorer. The game opened sensationally, Frickley losing their first wicket with the first ball of the match, when Tom Smith played on in facing Hesketh. Dyson and Frank Smith added 32 runs for the second wicket, and Dyson left at 42. There was a collapse at this point. Ward and Noble being dismissed at 51, and Seagraves a run later. Morris and Burkinshaw stopped the rot by taking the score to 73, but the last- three wickets fell cheaply. Brampton also showed that their real strength lay in bowling and not in batting. Smith and Evans gave the side a useful start by putting on 31 before the former was dismissed, but the displacement of Boon by Dyson responsible for a great change, Evans, Davis and Taylor leaving with only seven more runs on the board. Dodds and Hickling, however, paved the way to victory by taking the score to 76. With 5 for 31 Dyson claimed bowling honours for Frickley. for whom Burkinshaw and Boon each had 17 runs knocked off them without taking a wicket.
