Gift To Wombwell Nursing Division

A Generous Friend

A pleasant little ceremony was performed in the Wombwell Library on Tuesday evening when the presentation of a fully equipped oak storage cabinet was made to the Nursing Division of the Wombwell Ambulance Brigade by Mrs. R Stewart of Wombwell. On behalf of the Division the gift was received by Miss Ashberry, Divisional Officer, of Sheffield. Mrs. Dallas, Commandant of the Wombwell Nursing Division presided.

Mrs. Dallas said that Mrs. Stewart had been a most generous benefactor to the Division. At the last whist drive, when Mrs. Stewart gave a handsome donation, she had heard of the need for a storage cabinet and offered to supply one fully equipped, on condition that it was purchased in Wombwell.

Mrs. Dallas paid a warm tribute to Mrs. Stewart for her interest in the Division and the township. She also spoke appreciatively of the work of Nurse Lile, who had arranged the equipment, and of Dr. Taylor, the Divisional lecturer. She added that Mr. J. W. Poole of Wath, had been appointed storekeeper. Mrs. Dallas suggested that the cupboard should be inscribed, “I will do my best.” Appealing for more recruits the chairman observed that an increased membership was anticipated in the autumn.  By joining the Division, the nurses learned loyalty to each other apart from knowledge in first aid.

Making the presentation, Mrs. Walker congratulated Sergt. Taylor and declared that there was satisfaction in knowing that through his guidance the nurses gained knowledge whereby they could render aid to the more unfortunate.

Sergt. Taylor responded in suitable terms. Accepting the cabinet on behalf of the Division Miss Ashberry thanked Mrs. Stewart and observed that the Division was very fortunate in being the recipients of such a beautiful gift. She also congratulated Sergt. Taylor on his work as competition instructor and added that competitions inspired confidence. Miss Ashworth said Mrs. Stewart had kindly given a cup to be competed for in July at Wombwell Grange, by the Division in Wombwell and district, and appealed for a large entry.

A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. Stewart by Supt. S. Taberner who said the donor had made the presentation out of consideration for the Division and township. He observed that during his 25 years’ association with ambulance work he had noted that efficiency in first aid could save lives in many cases. A great change had taken place in recent years. Supt. J. W. Poole, Wath, proposed a vote of thanks to Miss Ashberry.
