Gallant Rescue

Award to Former Wombwell Man

Mr. Thomas Henry Bibbing, who is employed at the High Street, Rotherham, branch of the Maypole Dairy Company, and who lives at 23, Cambridge Crescent, East Dene, Rotherham, has been granted the Yorkshire Amateur Swimming Association rescue certificate, for rescuing a woman from the Trent at Gainsborough on May 28th.

Mr. Bibbing, who is a Wombwell man, had cycled to Gainsborough with a friend and had just reached the river bridge when he heard someone shout that there was a woman in the river.  He dropped his cycle, ran to the waters edge and seeing the woman in difficulties some distance away dived in at once, having taken off his coat as he was running.  The tide was high but Bibbing being a good swimmer, he reached the woman and got her to the side.  He applied artificial respiration and brought her round.  The rescue was seen by many people all of whom warmly congratulated Bibbing on his promptitude and pluck.
