Lieut-Col. H. S. Walker of Tankersley has been awarded the Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ certificate and silver medal for 34 years’ meritorious service.  He has for 27 years been chairman of the Sheffield branch of the Society.

The Regional Transport Commissioner North Eastern Region (Major F. S. Eastwood), has announced that the Ministry of War Transport has sanctioned an extension of the “curfew” hour for buses from 9 pm to 10pm in those cities and towns in the region where services ran to that hour in September, 1939.

Yorkshire contributed three to the total of 54 convictions for September, recorded by the R.S.P.C.A. for cruelty to animals. Of the total of 1,310 complaints of cruelty investigated, 768 registered cautions were administered by inspectors and 38 persons guilty of minor acts of cruelty were cautioned in writing.  Of the total 54 convictions, 7 came under the Wild Birds Protection Act and Protection of Birds Act.  Horses headed the list with 15 cases of cruelty recorded, and cats were next with eight.

Two trees, Hemingfield Road, Wombwell, former residence of Miss Dorothy Elliott, will be auctioned at the Royal Hotel, Barnsley, on Wednesday November 1st. Miss Elliott built Two Trees, standing in several acres of enclosed ground, for her own occupation.  On November 7th and 8th, the contents  of the house will be auctioned  at The Hut used by Miss Elliott as headquarters of a company of Rangers. The Commissioners are Messrs. C. E. Smith and Son, who sold Miss Elliott’s farm stock earlier this year.

National Savings for the week ended October 7th in the Wortley Rural district included National Savings certificates £2, 002; 3 per cent.  Defence Bonds £225; net deposits £2,167; a total of £4,394.

Sgt Arthur Hansford R.A.F. who is well known in the Mexborough and Swinton districts and who was reported missing in air operations against Germany on the night of April 24th-25th has been appointed to a commission as Piot Officer on probation with effect from March 13th 1944.  Pilot Officer Hansford is still on the R.A.F.’s list of missing.
