Wombwell Main Colliery
New Appointments
New Secretary and Accountant
The South Yorkshire Times was informed yesterday (Thursday) that at the next meeting of the Board of Directors of Wombwell Main Colliery, Mr. Albert S. Barnes, “Bemersyde,” Wood Walk, Wombwell, will be appointed company secretary to the Wombwell Main Colliery Co., Ltd.
The Board will also confirm the promotion of Mr. E. I. Allen formerly assistant secretary, to a new post as accountant to the company.
Mr. Barnes is 46 and is younger son of the late Mr. George Barnes who was employed at Wombwell Main for 54 years. He has been in the employment of the company since leaving school, starting in the wagon weigh in 1911 and rising to the position of cashier which he has held for six years. He was first Head Warden at Wombwell, then Divisional Warden for an area comprising Wombwell, Hoyland and Worsborough and recently was appointed Deputy Chief Warden for the Staincross Division.
Mr. Allen is 38 and lives at 54, Wood Walk, Wombwell. He also has been at Wombwell Main since leaving school. He started with the firm as junior clerk in 1920 and for the past seven years has been assistant secretary, previously being accounts clerk. He holds the Royal Society of Arts medal for accounting and has taught accountancy for Barnsley Technical College. He also has been occupied in Civil Defence, first as Deputy Head Warden to Mr. Barnes, and later as Deputy Head Warden and Head Fireguard for the Wombwell area.
