New County Alderman
Wombwell Councillor Appointed
Mr. John Willie Mellor, J.P., 246, Summer Lane, Wombwell, a member of Wombwell U.D.C., will have the congratulations of many friends on his election as an Alderman of the West Riding County Council.
He was elevated at a meeting of the County Council on Wednesday.
Mr. Mellor Is a native of Wombwell, and has been closely identified with trade union and political life in the Dearne Valley. He has been secretary of Wombwell Main branch of the Yorkshire 1918, and before that was a member of the branch committee.
He has been a member of Wombwell U.D.C. for thirty years and was chairman during 1924-5. He has been a member of the County Council for 17 years. He is vice-chairman of the General Purposes Committee, chairman of the T.B. Sub- Committee, a member and ea-chairman of the Standing Joint Committee, and a member of the Committee specially appointed to consider the proposed amalgamation of Public Health and Public Assistance. He was appointed Justice of the Peace about eight years ago.
Mr. Mellor is vice -chairman of the Wentworth Parliamentary Division Labour Party and of the Wombwell and Darfield District Labour Party.
Mr. Mellor’s elevation to the Aldermanic bench means that another County Councillor will have to be appointed for the district. Under the rule at present applying there will be no election, the choice of candidate being left to the Local Labour Party.
