Grimsby Town Players Secure Runners-Up Medals.
As The Wednesday Res. only drew at Castleford they lost the runners-up medals, which this season go to the Grimsby Town players.
The visit of The Wednesday Res. to Castleford ended in a goalless draw. The home players did most attacking, but could not defeat Birch, who kept a clever goal. Bellas also defended well, and Levick was the best of the visitors’ half-backs. On Castleford’s side the honours went to Brelsford, whilst Booth and Bartlett were prominent. Their forwards were weak. Whelpton had quite an easy time in Castleford’s goal.
Mexborough Town beat Barnsley Reserves 2-1 at Oakwell, and deserved their victory. There were 3,000 spectators, and the football served up was always of a scrambling nature, with the players showing lack of control in dealing with a light ball, a fast ground, and a fairly strong wind. Turner got the only goal of the first half for Barnsley, but after the interval Mexborough got on level terms through Walker. Ingham a couple of minutes later scored what proved to be the winning point. Evinson, the new Mexborough winger, did splendid work.
The game between Wombwell and Lincoln City Res., which the home club won 2-0, at Wombwell on Saturday, was typical of the end of the season, and both sides missed good opportunities through failure to control the ball in the strong wind. Bolsover, who was again the “live wire” of the Wombwell front line, scored in the first half, and Marshall, a new inside right, got Wombwell’s second goal immediately after the interval. Both goalkeepers, Westbrook for Lincoln, and Wingfield, another new man for Wombwell, made clever saves.
Wakefield were rather fortunate to draw 1-1 at ‘Meadow Lane. They had the worst of the game, which was not surprising considering the calibre of the men opposed to them, but Childs half-way through the second half scored a goal in a breakaway, and Notts County only equalised late in the game by means of a penalty, taken by Cope awarded for a foul on Hill. In the first half Johnson headed against the Wakefield post, and the bar was struck by Cashmore and ‘Death. Wakefield put up a fine defence all through.
A big crowd assembled at Boston on Saturday to witness the meeting of Boston and the champions, Worksop the former winning 1-0. Two minutes after the resumption Davis, the home centre, went through and put in a great drive which Machin handled, Although it looked quite accidental the referee awarded a penalty, which Davis easily converted.
Scunthorpe United had not the best available team on duty, and drew 1-1 with Harrogate. Good play was spasmodic, and, generally speaking, the match was a tame affair. Harrogate led at the interval by a goal scored by Carroll. Four minutes after the change of ends Broadhead equalised from a ‘penalty kick.
