A.T.C. Inspection

Flight-Lieutenant Lord Morven Cavendish-Bentinck at Wombwell

“You are now in the front line of support for the Royal Air Force. In a very short space of time entry to the Royal Air Force will only be through the Air Training Corps. I hope you will keep up the enthusiasm and keenness you have already displayed.”

These words were addressed by Flight-Lieutenant Lord Morven Cavendish-Bentlnck to Cadets of the Wombwell and Darfield Squadron of the A.T.C. when he reviewed them at Wombwell Modern School on Monday.

The Squadron was formed two months ago, and this was its first Inspection. Lord Cavendish-Bentinck, who is the second son of Duke of Portland, is a Staff Officer of the North-Eastern Region of the A.T.C.

After being met at Wombwell by the Chairman (Mr. J. Upton), the Secretary (Mr. F. T. Hatswell), and the Commanding Officer (Mr. E. A. Taylor), he inspected the headquarter’s offices in Church Street Chambers, equipment, the Squadron stores at Wombwell Gas- works and then proceeded to the Wombwell Modern School, where the Cadets were In training.

At the Modern School the Inspecting Officer was introduced to the following members of the Civil Committee: Canon J. St. Leger Blakeney (hon. chaplain), Captain A. B. Allott, J.P. Mr. H. Hallsworth , J.P., Mr. T. H. Burrows, J.P.. Mr. E. Coult (treasurer), and to Major S. H B. Cattell, O.C. Home Guard, who has taken a close interest in the development of the Squadron. He then inspected the Cadets, having a few words with each member of the Squadron individually. Out of a total strength of 105, some 73 Cadets were on parade, a very satisfactory total having regard to shift work difficulties.

Lord Morven also saw the Squadron “in action” in the gymnasium and at their classes in morse and mathematics in the classrooms.

Officers and instructors on duty at the inspection were: Commanding Officer A. E. Taylor, Adjutant K. M. Walker, Hon. Medical Officer L. Taylor, Messrs. J. L. Hay, D. Mackridge, J. Walters, P. Carr, K. Kilner, C. Taylor and A. Ibbotson.
