Wombwell Sergeant Wounded

”Veteran” of the war in Abyssinia, Sgt. George Henry Pye (29), son of Ambulance Officer G. H. Pye and Mrs. Pye, of 177, Summer Lane. Wombwell is now in hospital in the Middle East. The news was first received by his wife, who is living with her parents at Bristol. The official message states that further information will be forwarded as received.

Sgt. Pye, who is an old boy of Park Street Council School, Wombwell, left Darfield Main to join the West Yorkshires in 1932. He saw service in India, and, being at Quetta when the earthquake took place, helped in the work of rescue and recovery.

Leaving the colours as a reservist in July. 1939, he was recalled a month later, and went abroad the day war was declared, going to the Middle East where he has since remained. He experienced some heavy campaigning in Ethiopia, and was in the famous storming action before the Heights of Keren, staying there long enough to see Italy deprived of her newly gained territory. He has since been in action in Libya.

His brother. L.A.C. John E. Pye, who celebrated his 21st birthday two months ago, has been in Canada sinceĀ  Nov. 1940. He also worked at Darfield Main Colliery.

The brothers are both former members of the Wombwell Company of the Church Lads’ Brigade. Mr. Pye served as a sergeant in France in the last war and was wounded and gassed.
