Mexborough & Swinton Times – Friday 13 November 1931
It would be interesting to know how many Wombwell lads have joined the Army in recent months.
Undoubtedly the flow of recruits from this district has increased and what is also obvious is that most of them have gone not merely because Army service offers employment but because they see the prospect of a definite career. Too often pre-war enlistment was a way out of a scrape; nowadays the Army authorities are very particular, and a lad’s character capacity must bear the closest scrutiny.
A I do not know exactly how many recruits the Wombwell Parish Church has sent the Army and Navy in the past 12 months but cases are frequently announced in the parish magazine.
They include boys love taking a leading part in Congregational and Sunday school work. The latest to go is Mr Cyril Tingle, a member of the Parish Church choir, a Sunday school teacher, and son of Mr and Mrs Tingle, the church stewards.
He has been employed for years by Mr T Mackridge, of High Street and among young people in the town has been a popular figure.
In the parish Magazine the rector of Wombwell writes:
“The choir part with great regret with Cyril Tingle, who has been a member for many years. He has joined the Royal Artillery and the best wishes of all are extended to him that he may have a most successful career in the army.”
Given scope, lads of that calibre would do themselves and the town credit anywhere.
