Wombwell 3 Denaby United 1

Denaby’s Cup career came to an end, so far as this season is concerned, on Saturday. They were beaten at Wombwell – and well beaten too. The most enthusiastically biased of Denaby supporters will allow that Wombwell thoroughly deserved to win. The score of 3-1 left no room for argument or dispute.

The contest was keenly and strenuously fought and as a result, was one of the best displays seen on the Hough Lane ground. One that will surprise their supporters. They got a firm grip at the onset, and held throughout. They were on top form, and better teams than Denaby would not have prevailed against them.

As for Denaby United they did justice to their reputation.

In the circumstances it could scarcely not be expected. Whereas Wombwell were able to field the team originally selected, Denaby, were without Ashton (right half) Maguire (centre half) and Brayshaw (inside left) and the forward and halfback lines had to be recast.

As was expected, the gate was one of the best Wombwell have had this season. The crowd numbered about 5,000 and 2,000 of them were from Denaby
