F.A. Cup.
Mexborough Miss Chances and Denaby Prevail.
Wombwell Repeat History.
Mexborough Town 1 Denaby United 2
Mexborough, on their own ground, were beaten 2 – 1 by Denaby United. The game was a thrilling one, and attracted what must be almost a record crowd. Although the teams were very well matched, Mexborough had more chances than Denaby, and should have made a draw, if not a win, of it.
Walker, in the second half, failed to save with a. penalty kick. He was allowed to take the shot over, owing to an infringement by a. Denby man, and the second time he missed the goal altogether. Parry, the Mexborough centre-half, had a splendid chance of equalising in the last five minutes, but dallied too tong before taking his shot.
Mexborough scored first through Cox, Wilson giving Denaby the equaliser before the interval, and McGuire heading the winning goal ten minutes from time.
Wombwell Again Dismiss Rovers.
Wombwell 1 Doncaster Rovers 0
Wombwell were distinctly fortunate to win their English cup-tie with Doncaster Rovers at Wombwell on Saturday. lt will he remembered that last season they dismissed them by the same score.
The Rovers missed many golden opportunities of scoring in the first half, and paid for them dearly. Later on they shot with deadly accuracy, but could not get through. In the first half faulty work in front of goal was the feature of a fast game. Wood hit the mark just before the interval, Hendry making a rather poor attempt to clear.
The Rovers attacked strongly after tea minutes had elapsed in the second half, but Howson and Drew at full-back worked like Trojans, and Johnson was a commanding figure in goal. The pressure subsided, and the last ten, minutes’ play was of end-to-end nature. Foxall and Parton worked splendidly in the Wombwell forward line, and for Doncaster Naylor was perhaps the pack of a forward line.
Wombwell knocked Doncaster Rovers out of the cup competition last season by the same score.
