Deaf and Dumb Winger.
Such a notable display was given by Charles Hudson, an outside right, in the publjc practice game at Hough Lane on Saturday that Wombwell supporters will want to hear more about him.
He is an interesting player. He Was born at Barnsley, is 23 years of age and is employed as a casemaker at the Barnsley bobbin mill. More-over he is deaf and dumb, but he is a player of high intelligence, smart build and good “presence.”
He has been playing football with junior clubs in the Barnsley district since he left school, and under normal circumstances would doubtless have made a name for himself in the higher grades of the game before now. He was delighted when the opportunity to join Wombwell came his way.
Last year he was with Worsboro’ Bridge, and often the rumour was carried to Wombwell of a “flying winger” in that district.
Hudson has already won international honours of a kind: he was one of the most successful players in international games for the deaf at Amsterdam last August. In a match between teams representing Great Britain and Belgium, Great Britain won 12-0, and Hudson did the hat trick.
Hudson takes pains to keep himself fit and keeps a smart appearance on the field. One of his good points is his ability to get up high speed quickly from a dead start. Though he is unable to hear, it is said that he never misses the whistle. He has already won a place with Wombwell supporters.
