Sergeant E. Nutter
(York & Lancs)

Wombwell – Killed

Mrs E Nutter, 16 Alma St, received the following letter from France:

“I have no doubt that you will already have received from the War Office the sad news of the death of your husband, Sergeant E Nutter, but I felt I must write just to see how much we shall miss him in the platoon.

Sergeant Nutter was always untiring in his efforts to do his best both in action and in rest billets.

His recent promotion shows how we appreciate is good work. It may be a comfort to you to know that Sgt nutter died bravely while leading his men to cover from shellfire.

We buried him quietly the next day, a minister of his own church conducted the burial service.”

Sergeant H Simms, of Hawson St, Wombwell, has written:

“It is with feelings of deep regret that I write on behalf of my fellow sergeants and myself to ask you to accept our sincere sympathy on the death of your husband Sgt E Nutter. He was a true soldier and a good comrade, and may the knowledge that he died doing his duty sustain and help you to bear the great loss you are called upon to suffer. I attended his funeral this morning.”

Sergeant E Nutter enlisted on the outbreak of the war, previous to which he worked at Mitchell Main.
