Soldier – Dawson T.W. – Killed by a Shell

April 1917

Mexborough and Swinton Times April 21, 1917

Sgt TW Dawson

Mrs Dawson, of Victoria Road, Wombwell, has received the following letter from France:

“I have the painful duty of breaking bad news to you. Our son, Sapper TW Dawson, was this afternoon killed by a shell during an enemy bombardment of our billets.

If anything can mitigate your grief at this loss it will be that his death was instantaneous and that he, therefore, suffered no pain.

He will be buried tomorrow in a place which I must not name, but I have no doubt you will hear later from the authorities. Please accept my sincerest sympathy.

Your son was an excellent Sapper, and was well liked by his comrades.”
